  • Mortise panic bars

  • It ensures that a force of 66N or less can unlatch the door.  The device must operate when pressure is applied to the push pad or crossbar.
  • Afterward, an Ambient exposure test is conducted by exposing the device to high temperatures. It assures that the product can withstand high temperatures. 
  • The low temperature test is also performed to check the device’s ability to operate well if subjected to low temperatures. 
  • The preloading test is done for Grade 1 panic devices. It simulates the actual loads on the device before starting the cycle test.

OSHA Regulations and Code Compliance for Panic Bars Installation and Testing


OSHA generally stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This sets a few of the regulations that need to be followed. The key mission of this US federal agency within the Labor Department is to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. So, to install, test, and use the crash bars, one must follow the OSHA regulations:

  • Exit doors must be unlocked, and employees must be permitted to open them from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge.
  • Devices such as panic bars that lock only from the outside are allowed on exit egresses.
  • Exit route doors must be free of any device or alarm that could restrict emergency use if the alarm or other gadgets fail. 
  • Remember that non-compliance with these regulations can result in significant fines, legal liabilities, or even closure of the premises.

The codes one must know for the Panic bar fixing

International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC) 

  • Assembly (Group A) and Educational (Group E): Occupancies with an occupant load of 50 or more persons.
  • High Hazard (Group H): occupancies, regardless of occupant load.

NFPA 101: Life Safety Code

  • Assembly, Educational, and Daycare: occupancies with an occupant load of 100 or more persons.
  • High Hazard occupancies with an occupant load exceeding 5 persons.
